Youth People Obsessed With Sunless Tanning

Darker-complexioned teens will always seek a tanning bed or booth. Because they want a perfect and perpetual tan.

Younger, healthier, sexier, thinner

Many teenagers are either obsessed with tanning or addicted to a darker-complexion. According to psychologists, a cosmetic ideal obsession or an emotional addiction might be the cause. “Younger, healthier, sexier, thinner” – is the message a bronzed complexion is sure to send out. The medical community is trying to confront this trend by educating teenagers that too often and too intense tanning can be risky. It’s nothing wrong to be tanned, on the condition of:

  • gradual and moderate indoor tanning session
  • using without exception proper sunscreen indoor or sunscreen/sunblock outdoor
  • avoiding childhood sunburns

Thus, skin cancer risks are avoided. Are kids complying to medical warnings? According to Associated Press, only a third of 10,079 preteens and adolescents surveyed in 2002 said they had regularly used sunscreen during the former summer. About 10 percent admitted that they had used a tanning bed. And there is more. Most of those surveyed said they have suffered at least one sunburn during the previous summer.

Another significant study comes from Boston University. Researchers questioned about 10,000 children of nurses across the United States participating in the Nurse’s Health Study. The study started up in the late 1980s. The conclusions weren’t so positive. Only 34 percent of the teenagers – aged 12 to 18 -, reported using sunscreen regularly, and 83 percent had suffered at least one sunburn. 36 percent of surveyers had endured three or even more sunburns during the previous summer. Teenagers were familiar to tanning beds: 14 percent of the girls surveyed had used a tanning bed, rising to 35 percent among 17 year old girls.

Representatives of American Academy of Dermatology are puzzled since indoor tanning is so unnecessary. It’s not associated with playing sports or other outdoor activities. It is practiced exclusively for cosmetic reasons.

So young, so careless

Modern indoor salons gave up here and there traditional tanning beds and began to offer safer alternatives such as spray-on tanning or tanning booth which do not include UV light. Despite these better choices, youth would rather go to tanning beds using UV radiation because it is cheaper. They got there wrongly believing that tanning beds are safer than real sun exposure. They seem careless even if they are aware that UV rays delivered indoor are as dangerous as those outdoor.

It’s obvious that relatively few teenagers are aware that sunburns increase their risk of skin cancer. Yet they continue to use tanning beds regularly. What happens during childhood is crucial; an early sunburn history is the foundation of potential further cancer. Nationalwide warning campaigns in the United States didn’t show too many improvements in teens’ attitude. But things have to be changed drastically, since melanoma is rising to critical range. In the past years, at least 13 states have begun to regulate teen tanning (bed or booth exposing) by:

  • requiring parental presence
  • asking written parental agreement for teenagers under 18.
  • The state of California asks for a doctor’s prescription; otherwise, indoor tanning sessions are forbidden for kids under 18. Moreover, a bill in Maryland requires all three: parental presence, written consent of parents and medical approval ! The sooner teens learn to protect their skin, the better. Skin cancer is mostly incurable.

    Cleansing Liver Herbal Teas

    When spring comes it is time for a liver cleanse. This is a good time to rejuvenate the liver for the coming year of work. One good way to cleanse the liver is to use herbal teas. They are easy to use and they provide a powerful punch to reawaken the liver.

    Here is a herbal formulation for the liver provided by Brigitte Mars (herbalist in Colorado) called “Puri-Tea” which consist of:

    * Peppermint, red clover, fennel, licorice

    * cleavers, dandelion, oregon grape root, burdock root

    * butternut bark, chickweed, parsley root, nettles.

    Another liver herbal tea is:

    * Fennel Seed (1 part), Fenugreek (1 part)

    * Flax Seed (1 part), Licorice Root (1/4 part)

    * Burdock (1/4 part), Peppermint (1 part).

    Here’s another herbal combination that is good for detoxifying and cleansing the liver:

    * Yellow Dock root, Dandelion root, Licorice root

    * Red sage, Sarsaparilla, Hyssop

    * Pau de Arco, Milk Thistle Seed, Parsley leaf.

    Here’s something else you can do for you liver. Buy an extract of Milk Thistle Seed. Then when you make the liver tea’s list here, add 2-3 full droppers of the Milk Thistle Seed extract to the tea. Here are the effects of some of the herbs listed above.

    * fennel seed – white cell formation, acid/alkaline balancing

    * peppermint – body cleanser and toner

    * red clover – blood purifier

    * licorice – adrenal stimulation

    * cleavers – anti-infection

    * dandelion – cleansing and strengthening

    * oregon grape root – cleansing, building

    * burdock root – purifying

    * nettles – rich in minerals

    * chickweed -

    * fenugreek – helps to eliminate toxins and mucus

    * yellow dock root – cleansing, white cell formation

    * pau de arco – cleansing, white cell formation

    * milk thistle seed – cleansing, building

    You can make these teas yourself or look for a ready made one at a health food store. What I do is buy a 1/2 or 1 oz of each herb. Then I mix one full tablespoon of each herb into a mason jar. Shake it up and its ready to go.

    Preparing the tea

    Boil 1 1/4 cup of distilled water in a glass container. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of herbal mixture. Let tea sit for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink when it cools down a little.

    Drink one cup of tea before breakfast and one before dinner for about 1-2 months.

    Fruits and Juices Important for Relieving Hemorrhoids Part I

    Foods to Avoid

    Chili Peppers
    It has been found that when you eat a lot of chili peppers that you can get a burning sensation in the rectum or anus. It is best to avoid eating too many peppers, especially if you have an advance case of hemorrhoids. Peppers are actually good for blood circulation and for healing ulcers. It is always the excess that creates problems in your body.

    Here are some additional foods to avoid, which cause constipation.

    ? Coffee
    ? Alcohol
    ? Bad Fats
    ? Animal products
    ? Red meat

    Foods you should be eating to help relieve hemorrhoids

    A high fiber diet obtained from raw fruits and vegetables is what you need to eat for eliminating and for preventing constipation. When you don’t have constipation, you won’t have hemorrhoids.

    The amount of fiber you should be eating is 25 35 grams per day. Most people only eat about 8 ? 12 grams per day.

    If you have not been eating a lot of fiber, you need to add fiber slowly to your diet, especially if you add it by using bran. Increase your use of bran or other bran cereals over a couple of weeks.

    If you add fiber to your diet with fruits and vegetables, you can add them freely without much problem. However, since your stomach will not be use to it, you may experience more gas for a week or two. You can compensate for this by taking digestive enzymes to help you digest the extra produce.

    The following list of juices and fruits are good for helping cure or relieve Hemorrhoids.

    Juices

    Juices are good for hemorrhoids but especially dark berry juices mixed with equal parts of apple juice. The dark berry juices to use are,

    Cherries, blackberries, blueberries

    These berries contain “anthocyanins” and “proanthocyanidins” which reduce hemorrhoidal pain and Swelling by toning and strengthening the hemorrhoid veins. Drink at least one glass of this juice mixture each day.

    Cantaloupe

    Cantaloupes are one of the best foods you can eat. It has a good source of vitamins and minerals. It has a high beta-carotene level and has anti-clogging properties.

    Red and Black Currant Berries

    Currants are high in Vitamin C, rutin, and minerals. This makes their juice valuable in clearing hemorrhoids. The also have a small amount of the fatty acid GLA, which produce prostaglandin that control body pain.

    This juice is also good for cleansing the liver and blood. Good liver function is necessary for maintaining a healthy colon, rectum and anus.

    Drink 1 ?2 glasses a day of red or black currant berries.

    Pomegranate Juice

    Although pomegranate juice may be hard to find, it is quite useful in reducing hemorrhoids, because of its strong astringency. Saturate a cotton ball with pomegranate juice and push it slightly into your rectum.

    If you have pinworms, the tannins in pomegranate juice will help you get rid of them. You can also drink the juice. During the summer I have on occasion found pomegranate juice at a farmers market. It is slightly tart but it is easy to drink. However, it’s hard to drink more than a glass full without getting a stomach upset.

    Oranges and bananas

    Eat 2-3 oranges and 2 bananas a day. Oranges provide vitamin C, bioflavonoids, and fiber. Bananas provide minerals that help to strengthen tissue and have plenty of fiber. Bananas can also be steamed to give more relief and even eliminate hemorrhoids. Steam two not quite ripe bananas with their peel until they are soft. Eat two in the morning and two in the evening.

    Papaya

    Papaya is an excellent fruit to eat. It has good mineral content, fiber, and has enzymes to digest protein.

    These are the fruits and juices to use to for relieving hemorrhoids. Adding more vegetables to your eating habits is also important to get more fiber. These fruits, juices, and vegetables will help you keep regular and provide pain and inflammation relief for your hemorrhoid symptoms.
