Ease of installation is another factor that contributes largely to its popularity. You can easily lay it on the sub surface without even gluing or using adhesives. However rug cleaning could be one of the most challenging tasks you will be facing.

Choosing designer furniture and beds for the bedroom

Of all the rooms in the house, the bedroom is perhaps the most personal. Although it’s rarely seen by anyone other than its owner (unless it’s a guest bedroom), a bedroom can be a perfect place to give full expression to personality and design flair.

Choosing a bed, and accompanying furniture is incredible important; we spend up to a third of our lives in our bedrooms. Obviously, we’re unaware of our surroundings for much of that time, being asleep, but the times spent before and after sleep are incredibly formative, both of the quality of sleep we’re to have, and of the day to come. The recipe for a fantastic day begins with the bedroom, where use of designer furniture, careful decoration and soft furnishing choices makes the room a haven for calm. Being the largest piece of furniture you’ll own, a bed is of course, your most important design choice.

So it’s often worth splashing out & buying the best bed you can afford, with designer furniture to match. Designer furniture will always look good, not dictated by fashion, but always up to the minute. Generally, the better designer beds by Italian furniture makers like Bonaldo and Jesse really stand the test of time, not just in quality, but also in style. So called ‘trendy’ furniture tends to look very dated a few years on, but upmarket Italian furniture will always look great.

But first the practical considerations. Most couples prefer as large a bed as space allows – king sized if possible – in order that both can comfortably stretch out and luxuriate. However, king size or super king beds can easily over-dominate a small space, so it may be better to buy a double bed instead. At just 135cms wide double beds are still big enough to fit two, but compact enough to work well in smaller rooms. Choice of bed size is very important. Claustrophobia is not a good ‘feel’ for a bedroom. A bed must be at least six inches longer than its tallest occupant, so in a small room, width may have to be sacrificed for length.

Consider the overall space that you have at your disposal. A four-poster bed may seem wonderful on the pages in the catalogue or in the showroom, but would it really suit your room? Are your ceilings high enough? Is the room spacious with plenty of empty floor space? If not it is best to avoid these beds, as what will suit a beautiful Tuscan villa won’t look so good in a small modern bedroom.

Contemporary beds are always a safe bet, as styles can be chosen that are as unobtrusive as possible, unless of course you want to make the bed the absolute focal point of a room. Most contemporary beds are quite low – adding a sense of space & light to smaller rooms. Larger rooms are best suited to king sized beds, where single beds or smaller double beds would be swallowed up by the space.

The space around your bed and other bedroom furniture is also important. Think about how you and your partner might move around the bedroom. Will progress be impeded too much? Is there enough space to dress? Are there sharp corners that will be painful if bumped into? A well-built, bespoke wardrobe may be your storage answer, or perhaps separate pieces of lovingly-chosen designer furniture. Tallboys will give plenty of storage room without taking up too much precious storage space & can be a practical way to keep the usual small bedroom objects, eg hairbrushes out of sight but within easy reach.  A bedroom is a room very much lived-in, and there should be allowances made for the everyday and essential ‘clutter’ of a bedroom: glasses of drinking water, spectacles, books and magazines.

When choosing each piece of designer furniture or accessory for your bedroom, try and get each piece to complement the next, thus helping to create a unified whole. It is perfectly acceptable to mix styles, urban and rustic, old and contemporary. It’s increasingly common to see contemporary design in older settings such as barn conversions, and of course there are always elements of technology we wouldn’t want to do without even in a period design. Halogen lighting, hidden sound systems and even televisions (artfully tucked away) may make their mark even in a Shaker-styled bedroom! Just remember that the bedroom’s design should reflect you and your tastes.

Avoid Rug Pads Sold In Packages

It is not very easy to find a quality rug pad in retail stores. The reason is that the retailer does not want to tie up much money in inventory as well as the fact that the rug pad takes space. What many retailers now do is drop ship the pad to the customer from a separate warehouse, without even seeing the product. The problem here is that the warehouse usually stores the pads folded in packages and these could be sitting on a shelf for weeks and months until shipped. It is best to avoid rug padding, whether from a retail brick and mortar store or from an online store, that is pre-cut and prepackaged.

I recently received a phone call from a woman who wanted to buy a rug pad. She stated that she had just received one that she ordered online from one of the mass marketed stores. She told me that she placed the pad on her floor and noticed bumps every 18 inches. This is where the pad was folded. The type of pad she received was a jute and rubber combination pad. Apparently, wherever there were fold marks, the rubber was sticking to itself as if melted together. This, she claims, created bumps through her rug. The problem here is that these bumps cause a trip hazard for people walking on the rug. The bumps also create an awkward look to your rug and finally, the bumps will cause premature wear patterns on those parts of the rug.

It is best to order and buy your rug pads, whether they be rubber pads, jute pads, non slip pads or a combination of any, from a company that stores the rug pad in rolls. Rug pads are manufactured in rolls of 3′, 6′ and 12′ wide and most warehouses cut these rolls immediately and package them to sit on a shelf or to ship to retailers. The major problem here is that such a practice is hard to find because these roils take up space. Most stores will not go through the effort of stocking the rolls, cutting to the rug size and then wrapping and shipping. To them, this is wasted valuable time when they can simply either stock some packages that take up a fraction of the space and that require no cutting at all or to drop ship your order direct from the warehouse that stocks the pads.

At Rug Pad Corner, http://www.rugpadcorner.com, we take pride in offering the proper rug pads in the proper way, by cutting each order when it comes in. This guarantees the quality of the pad as well as the function of its use when it is in your home. This is the old fashioned way of doing business and there may be a few others around doing it this way. If you find one, go for it and you can rest assured your rug pad will lie as flat as possible, do the job it was meant for and last as long as it should.

Art Nouveau Architectural Style – An Overview

Art Nouveau (“New Art”) is an architectural style that became extremely popular in the early 20th century. Art Nouveau features organic and floral motifs and stylized curvilinear forms. The basic concept is bringing art into everyday settings. Although Art Nouveau was first used in Europe it soon spread to the rest of the world and began showing up everywhere from architecture to furniture.

The Art Nouveau style was a reaction against the rigid and formal styles found in the 18th century. Many buildings were built in this style and feature arches, stained glass, Japanese motifs and asymmetrical shapes. It is ironic that although Art Nouveau emphasizes nature and natural forms it was an urban city trend. It was especially popular in Paris and art nouveau influences can still be seen today.

Art Nouveau 3 Light Ceiling Light

In the United States Art Nouveau was popular in larger cities like New York and Chicago. An example is the glasswork of Louis Comfort Tiffany who created beautiful glass designs featuring flowers, plants and insects in stylized patterns. Art Nouveau remained popular in the United States and Europe until the outbreak of the first World War. Although Art Nouveau went out of style the concept of creating aesthetically beautiful buildings using natural themes has remained.

Using the art nouveau style in your home is a great way to add simple and beautiful detail. LookInTheAttic & Company offers a wide range of home hardware and lighting in the art nouveau style. Remember that Art Nouveau can be introduced as a complete theme through your entire house or as a little extra detail on a cabinet or piece of furniture. The wide variety of designs makes this a versatile architectural style.

Awesome Kids Furniture

Ever imagined how furniture was introduced? This article will surely make you know and realize that furniture was present during ancient times. Let us go back in time and discover how furniture before was able to emerged as an art to fashion. Furniture was already present approximately during 3000 BC, wherein furniture was found in a preserved village located in Orkney, Scotland. Within this broad definition, humans have been able to improve the pattern and designs of furniture. The concept of form gradually improves through the ages. Furniture is considered as a form of decorative art, wherein the artist thinks of a design and brings it to life by making furniture that can represent his thought.
Archaeologists were confident that they will be able to find shelves and decorated serving stands dated 8th Century BC in Gordion, Turkey. This was also the time were they discovered the earliest carpet in Siberia. Furniture during Ancient Egypt includes beds, boxes and chairs dating from 1550 to 1200 BC. Building furniture was also present in Ancient Greece with furniture dating from 2nd millennium BC to 18th century. Beds and chairs are preserved by images in Greek vases which we can see in every Greece artifact.
During the time of Europe’s awakening, wood was the superior raw material in making furniture thus the furniture was usually hard and decorated with inscribed figures. During the time of early contemporary Europe, furniture making was a blast. During the 17th century, both Southern and Northern Europe was characterized by opulent and often gilded Baroque designs. Palladianism was a style that belonged to Great Britain while the Rococo and Neoclassicism are common in Western Europe. People will request designs different from the rest so that they can claim that they are who has the unique design for furniture.
In the year of 1980, the fashions of the furniture had so proliferated and risen up to new heights that literally hundreds of models existed. It was this time when the positive aspect of this stylistic era was the enormous chain of choices it offered, from basic modern to high-tech industrial furnishings. Live-edge was introduced as one unique outgrowth of post-modern furniture design, which incorporates the natural edge of the wood blending it with the design if the furniture. Asian furniture made a statement and has a quite distinct history in terms of form and designs. The Chinese uses the uncarved wood and bamboo. This is very evident in China because of its incredible and diverse history. Furniture can represent one dynasty to the next. Traditionalistic Japanese furniture is well known for its minimalist style, high-quality craftsmanship. They use wood grain instead of painting and lacquer thinner. Chest designs are elaborated with decorative iron work. Furniture is here to stay because it will never disappear nor be replaced. Furniture is a thing of the past, the present and the future.
We are able to know that furniture also played a vital role in our world. It can represent a certain event that took place in a certain country. From basic designs to complicated and exquisite designs, furniture has gone up the ladder in terms of quality, designs and materials used.

If you are like most people you will notice that the retail stores are all decked out for the Christmas and Holiday season approaching. They are banking on higher sales as the economy picks up, so they are adding more lights to catch our attention. If you like the look of the Holidays like me, these decorations are getting us in the Spirit of the Season. This can only mean one thing… time to think about decorating my home.

Before you go out and buy lights to hang on everything not moving, let me give you some tips first.

Here are my dos and donts for using Holiday Lights.

1) Do pick a theme for your decor, like all white lights or blue or red. This will make more of an impact and ads some design style. No offense to the multi-color lovers out there. That is a different look all together that is equally charming. Those people might use jewel tones for candles and ornaments to add to the colorful scene.

2) Do not use different light sets together. Some people mix up their old and new lighting and I don’t like to see this. When you are dealing with electricity, even this low voltage type, you need to think about fire safety. Before you string up the lights outdoors and indoors, maybe you can take your kids or a small group of kids to your local firehouse to teach them some things about fire safety. This time of year is high on the list for fires caused by dried live trees lit up with faulty lighting. Call the fire house first to see when they could give you the tour and talk to your group. Then, throw out those old lights and buy them all from one place. GKI Bethlehem Lighting is my favorite if you can find them, but GE or another brand name would be a safe bet too.

3) Do wrap the lights loose around the branches or railings. Some times lighting gets too tight and can cause those blackouts in the strands we hate to see. One tip is to string your lights while they are on. Yes, this is not a hazard unless you get a call or a visitor. In that case, turn them off until you can get back to decorating. This keeps them cool and you can be sure to see any outages before you finish decorating. Once all the lights are in, then add the BLING!

4) Do not plug in more than 4 to 6 light strands together. Most companies will tell you on the packaging how many lights can snap together without over loading the little fuses. You may want to get extra bulbs and fuses when you are at the store, they never have them after the season is underway. If you think you will need extra, buy them all together when you get the big sale price. Yes, they may knock off another $2 later, but please save your self some headache and time…buy them now. You will spend more in time and gas going back for more lights, trust me. 100 count light sets, you can bet no more than 5 linked together. 25 and 50 count, I would make sure no more than 6 together. From my experience, and I have seen my share of Macy’s decorating, you can use the 6 ft and 8 ft extension cords to add more lights. The cords are easily hidden. No one will see it and you can be sure the lights will stay on and not blow a circuit or a fuse. You can also use black electrical tape to make sure the connections are safe and secure. This is a good husband job, they love hanging the lights. You can come back with your ornaments and glitter flowers when he’s done.

5) Do not over load your outlets. If you have any questions, electricians don’t mind a short consultation to let you know how to wire your Holiday decor. Better safe than sorry when you are lighting up like an airport outdoors. There are decorating companies that can help you and they know exactly how to wire everything safely.

6) Do have fun with your kids or friends in this process. Many times I have invited people over for drinks, music and games when we decorate for the Holidays. Make it an event to remember. They lights are great and all, but sharing memories with loved ones is priceless. That’s why we really have these Holidays anyway, right? There are religious events all through this season, but lets not forget the message of those celebrations. Peace! Joy! Love!

7) Do send me pictures, I would love to see your design work. If you get into a tough spot, I am available through email or a phone call. Ask all the questions you like, I am ready to help you. If you live in New York and don’t have the time to decorate, call me. Tell me what color you want and how you want it to look. My team and I will have you Decked Out in a Flash. Then you can enjoy your party and lavish in all the compliments when the music is rocking.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
